There are three different grades of essential oils that I’m aware of. Grade C are perfume grade, Grade B are food grade and Grade A is therapeutic grade. Perfume grade oils are inferior grade oils made from inferior plant parts that are chemically extracted and usually diluted in come type of carrier oil. Quite often the oil itself is synthetic…not even the real thing. Perfume oils should never be taken internally. Food grade oils are a step up, but still of an inferior quality. You still find chemical extractions, synthetics and diluted products…but at a higher price. Therapeutic grade oils should be 100% pure oils, with no synthetics. The oils should be extracted with steam distillation, not chemicals and lastly there should be a huge price difference when compared to the two lesser quality grades. Price can be very subjective so let me give you an example. Jasmine oil in a perfume grade you can probably pick up at your health food store for under $ 10 per oz. Jasmine in a food grade oil would probably jump to $ 25-30. A therapeutic grade Jasmine is going to be closer to $ 100 for a tiny 10ml bottle. A one ounce bottle is equal to 29.5 ml. Anyway, huge price difference, huge difference is quality of results. If you are doing any serious aromatherapy or healing work you want the highest grade of oil. The truth is when it comes to essential oils you have to know your distributor. Look for someone with a known reputation for delivering quality oils. And, if you stumble across something online that seems just to good to be true…guess what?
